Resisting with electricity: hybrid plants in Ukraine

Electriciens sans frontières completes nearly 100 hybrid installations to secure access to energy for essential infrastructure in Ukraine.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, access to electricity has remained an essential condition for the continuity of vital services. Electriciens sans frontières, a French NGO that has been mobilized since the first weeks of the Russian invasion, has intensified its actions in support of local populations and institutions, with one objective: to maintain essential services in a context of armed conflict.

Since August 2023, with the support of the Crisis and Support Center of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the NGO has installed nearly 100 solar hybrid solutions in 10 different oblasts. These systems now power schools, health centers and pumping stations, critical infrastructures highly exposed to power cuts caused by incessant shelling.

Each hybrid system combines solar panels, batteries and a generator to provide continuous power, controlled by intelligent energy management.

Meeting strategic and vital needs

These installations supply power to the shelters built into many buildings: in an emergency situation, people can take refuge there and continue their activities. In schools, for example, pupils can continue to study; in health centers, emergency care can be maintained.

Answering calls from municipalities in the Eastern and Southern Oblasts

Faced with unstable access to electricity and water in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, regularly targeted by Russian attacks, local municipalities are calling for concrete, sustainable support. In response to these urgent requests, Electriciens sans frontières intends to deploy more than 15 additional hybrid solutions, to cover the needs of almost 100,000 people.

Invited by the Ukrainian Embassy in France, Electriciens sans frontières is taking part in the 3rd International Summit of Cities and Regions to be held in Kiev, the aim of which is to bring together local authorities, Ukrainian businesses and international partners to accelerate reconstruction, strengthen energy resilience and build the foundations of an energy-independent Ukraine.
