Cyclone emergency in Mayotte

On 14 December, cyclone Chido hit Mayotte hard, causing considerable damage and leaving many people in need. In this emergency context, rapidly restoring access to electricity is essential for the populations affected.

RESTORING ELECTRICITY TO THE WORST-HIT COMMUNES

In the days following the devastating passage of cyclone Chido and Dikeledi, we were called upon by Electricité de Mayotte (EDM) via EDF Systèmes Énergétiques Insulaires (SEI).

Material resources were mobilised: 46 generators, 31 of which were made available to the municipalities by Electricité de Mayotte, and 3 tonnes of electrical equipment (solar kits, cables, connection boxes, etc.) to restore electricity to the worst-hit municipalities.

ACTIONS TAKEN ON THE GROUND

✅ Deployment of an initial mission on 6 January with 4 technicians from the IEGs and volunteers from our NGO.
✅ Collaboration with the NGO Mlezi: securing almost 20 sites and connecting generators.
✅ Priority diagnostics in the worst-affected areas: Mamoudzou and the surrounding area, in particular to secure electrical installations and assess the need for solar power plants.
✅ Diagnostics and sizing for social and medico-social activities in isolated communes in the north of Grand Terre: securing infrastructure facilities providing basic services to the population (schools, reception centres).
✅ Distribution of solar equipment (lamps and kits) to staff from local associations and NGOs who have not yet been connected and to the worst affected households,

🤝 Next steps: A second mission, already on site, will remain in the area until the end of January to continue these activities. In partnership with Solidarités International, we will also be helping to diagnose and size the infrastructure that will require the cooperation of several trades.

Thank you to all our partners and volunteers for their commitment to helping the affected population and responding rapidly to the needs identified.
