FROM MADRID TO GLASGOW, WE UNVEIL OUR SOLUTIONS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
In 2019, during COP 25 in Madrid, Electriciens sans frontières received the UN Climate Action Award for its achievements on the island of Dominica. On the occasion of COP 26, the NGO is organizing a roundtable devoted to examples of projects that improve access to energy for the poorest populations, while promoting their economic and human development as well as preserving the climate.

“How to reconcile universal access to modern energy with the fight against climate change?“

As the energy transition goes along with the fight against climate change, this exchange will highlight sustainable, affordable and environmentally friendly solutions that enable universal access to energy. The event will consist in a roundtable discussion with a panel of organizations representing the diversity of the energy sector, from an NGO to two electricity and hardware companies and an international agency. It will be devoted to concrete and recent examples of projects that improve access to energy for the world’s poorest populations, including essential services for development and preserving the climate.

FOCUS ON ELECTRICIENS SANS FRONTIERES PROJECTS: FROM DOMINICA TO LEBANON
Improving the resilience of the island of Dominica to climate change: In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Dominica. Following this dramatic event, Electriciens sans Frontières installed solar photovoltaic power plants, adapted to extreme weather conditions, which allow Dominica’s health care centers to function normally during storms. By using renewable energy to replace generators, the project reduces the island‘s greenhouse gas emissions. This project was made possible thanks to the support of the Fondation de France, the EDF Group Foundation, Schneider Electric and Capenergie.
Strengthening the resilience of schools in Lebanon: On August 4th, the people of Beirut faced a devastating explosion. The disaster struck at a time when the country was already experiencing an economic crisis, with an unstable power grid. The installation of photovoltaic installations on the roofs of schools and training centers makes it possible to meet both economic challenges by reducing the costs associated with electricity needs and environmental challenges by limiting the use of generators. This project was made possible thanks to the support of the EDF Group Foundation, ADEME, the Fondation de France, Nexans, ecosystem and Zayed Sustainability Price.
