Resisting with electricity: hybrid plants in Ukraine

THE CONTEXT

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, access to electricity has played a crucial role in the survival of the civilian population. Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure quickly became a recurring target, paralyzing essential structures such as schools, hospitals and water supply stations, and exacerbating the suffering of civilians.

Electriciens sans frontières, which has been mobilized since the first weeks of the Russian invasion, has intensified its actions in support of local populations and institutions, with one objective: to maintain essential services in a context of armed conflict.

OUR APPROACH

Since August 2023, with the support of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs’ Crisis and Support Center and French and European electricity companies, the NGO has installed nearly 100 solar hybrid solutions in 10 different oblasts. These systems now power schools, hospitals and health centers, as well as pumping stations– critical infrastructures that are highly exposed to power cuts caused by incessant bombing.

Each hybrid system combines solar panels, batteries and a generator to provide continuous power, controlled by intelligent energy management.

OUR IMPACT

  • Ensure the continuity of essential services in the event of power cuts, in order to meet the needs of the population.
  • Sustainably meeting the energy needs of essential structures
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in targeted structures
  • Strengthening local capacities to sustain the solutions implemented
